February 15, 2018 by Anat Raz M.S., L. Ac.Moxibustion is a warming technique. The term derived from the Japanese word mogusa or mo kusa, meaning, “burning herb.”This herb has special properties allowing the heat to penetrates from the points deeper into the channels. By moving and warming it helps the bodies healing and supports the immune system. It can be used for arthritis, strains, sprains, sports injuries, tendinitis ect.
Moxa is harvested from the mugwort plant (artemisia vulgaris or artemisia argyii). After harvesting, the leaves are ground aged for 3-5 years before use.
Smokeless Moxa can be used indoors (it does produce minimal amount of smoke). When you start a new stick the edge is flat but after the first use it will create a coned shape. We recommend you light it will a grill lighter or torch, or stick it in a gas stove until you see the red embers.
We also use regular Moxa sticks, it is very easy to light but it is very smoky. Best to be used outdoor, back yard or porch.
Use the Moxa stick about half an inch to an inch away from the skin, you should feel the heat but not burning. Moxa sticks can be used on many different areas on the body especially wrists, fingers, elbows, knees, ankles and lower back (if someone can assist you). It is good to spend 10-15 minutes per area.
One stick can be used multiple times. To extinguish the stick wrap it in aluminum foil and leave it on ceramic or glass dish.
